Table kny-φ1000

A round table of solid yamazakura (mountain cherry) and iron, designed for a friend who loves bringing people together.

We chose a circle as a form around which people can naturally face one another and gather. The diameter, 1,000 mm, was set to the scale of the space it stands in.

With a round table, the position of the legs changes how chairs can be placed and how the table is used. Here, so that a chair can go anywhere around it, the legs are gathered at the centre of the top, clear of the chairs. Slender round steel bars are used for the legs, making the top look light.

Each joint is welded by a craftsman, and the traces of the welding are deliberately left, giving the table the expression of handwork. The soft texture of yamazakura and the plain look of iron together make a table that carries the warmth of the hand.
